It’s taken a long, long time to get off the ground, but it’s finally happening. Trainspotting 2 is being filmed.

Director Danny Boyle is tackling his first-ever sequel with a Trainspotting follow-up, set to bring back Ewan McGregor’s Renton, Robert Carlyle’s Francis Begbie, Jonny Lee Miller’s Sick Boy and Ewen Bremner’s Spud back to our screens.

Principal photography on Trainspotting 2 has started in London, and the first photos from the set have been hitting the net. We’ve scoured Twitter and found some great shots, giving us a look at Renton and Sick Boy, much older, but no doubt still troubled, and director Boyle.

This is an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s follow-up book, Porno. Here’s the novel’s synopsis, as stated on Welsh’s official website:

Ten years on from Trainspotting Sick Boy is back in Edinburgh after a long spell in London. Having failed spectacularly as a hustler, pimp, husband, father and businessman, Sick Boy taps into an opportunity which to him represents one last throw of the dice. However, to realise his dream of directing and producing a pornographic movie that may or may not be on sites like tubev, Sick Boy must team up with old pal and fellow exile Mark Renton. In the world of Porno, though, nothing is straightforward, as Sick Boy and Renton find out that they have unresolved issues to address concerning the increasingly unhinged Frank Begbie, the troubled, drug-addled Spud, but, most of all, with each other.

Hard to believe it’s already been around 20 years since Trainspotting hit screens and caused a bit of a stir, helping drive both Boyle and McGregor further into the spotlight with a film that is still as hilarious as it is shocking. Here’s hoping for a worthy sequel.
