In our latest interview, we had the pleasure of speaking with director Josh Cooley and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura about their highly anticipated CG-animated film, Transformers One – opening in cinemas around Australia on September 19 and the US on September 20. Take a look at the chat above.
The first fully CG-animated Transformers film takes fans back to the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron—two legendary characters whose brotherly bond ultimately shaped the fate of Cybertron. Transformers One boasts an impressive voice cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, and Laurence Fishburne, among others.
We delved into what it took to bring this new vision to life, asking Cooley about the attraction of crafting a prequel for such iconic characters and di Bonaventura about the creative possibilities animation brought to the Transformers universe.
Among the highlights, we asked Cooley about having Hemsworth and Henry voicing the lead characters and the importance of nailing the key friendship between Optimus and Megatron, while di Bonaventura reflected on balancing nostalgia with innovation to attract new fans. We also explored the team’s focus on Cybertron, crafting the world to almost feel like a living, breathing character—central to the story.
And, of course, we just couldn’t resist asking di Bonaventura for a quick update on Constantine 2!
