Paramount Pictures has dropped a big new trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight, Michael Bay’s fifth and apparently last outing directing the massive franchise.
Cinematic Transformers lore gets a big expansion here, with a plot that finds Optimus Prime turning to the dark side and a backstory that includes King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
I was invited to a special “IMAX Event” showcasing quite a bit of early footage from the film. Suffice it to say, apart from a few interesting plot points relating to that aforementioned backstory and Anthony Hopkins’ character, there wasn’t too much that really came as a surprise. On a technical level, even with some of the visuals not completed, the film looks incredible – a number of scenes showcased why fans should definitely fork out extra dough to see it on IMAX screens. Wahlberg does his thing, Hopkins is a welcome addition and Jerrod Carmichael looks to add some levity. It’s perhaps confident young Nickelodeon star Isabela Moner that proves to be a bit of a standout, and her cute Autobot co-star Sqweeks should prove to be a nice merchandise hit. Bay has his usual stylings on display; explosions, swooping camera work, hero shots. Overall, the footage confirmed what I’ve said before: Hardcore fans of the franchise will likely have a field day with this big new chapter, while detractors and the disinterested probably won’t be converted.
Take a look at the new trailer below.
Transformers: The Last Knight, also starring Laura Haddock, Stanley Tucci, John Goodman, John Turturro, Josh Duhamel, Gil Birmingham and Jean Dujardin, arrives Down Under on June 22 and hits the US on June 23.
Synopsis for Transformers: The Last Knight:
The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).
There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.
