Take a look at the trailer that’s arrived for True History of the Kelly Gang, a new take on the life of the Australian outlaw and bushranger.
Australian streaming service Stan has acquired the film for local release (IFC Films has distribution rights in the US), and they’ve dropped quite a promising first trailer to get the hype going. The film is based on the book of the same name by Aussie author Peter Carey. Despite the title, the book is a work of fiction and is only loosely inspired by Kelly and his gang.
Aussie helmer Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed) directs this one from a script by Aussie screenwriter Shaun Grant (Snowtown, Berlin Syndrome, Jasper Jones), and it looks like an energetic, bloody, artistic take on the armour-wearing cultural icon. Playing Kelly is constantly-impressive British actor George MacKay, whose credits include Captain Fantastic and upcoming war film 1917. The cast includes Russell Crowe, Charlie Hunnam, Nicholas Hoult, and Essie Davis as Ned’s mother.
Reviews from the film’s festival run so far have been very positive, with many praising the film’s intensity and feverish style. And with this trailer… yeah, we’re looking forward to it.
It’s quite the get for Stan, too.
“I am thrilled in the boldness and daring by Stan to embrace our ambitious film,” said Kurzel. “For Australians to see our take on Peter Carey’s extraordinary book in cinemas and on Stan over the summer is very exciting. I hope as many eyes as possible get the opportunity to see a film the makers are deeply proud of.’
True History of the Kelly Gang will be opening on select Australian cinemas on January 9 and hits Stan on Australia Day.
