Netflix has released the first trailer for The Umbrella Academy, the streaming giant’s upcoming series adaptation of the comic book series created and written by former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá.
The plot tells of a group of unique individuals with strange and wonderful abilities that reunite upon the news of their adoptive father’s death. Their reunion finds them having to work together to uncover the reason behind their father’s demise, and to save the world.
This looks like a nuttier X-Men, and it’s one we’re putting on our ‘highly interested’ list of oh. so. many. upcoming Netflix shows/movies. There’s a decent amount of snippets to take in with this first trailer, including Ellen Page, a hyper-intelligent ape, and Mary J. Blige as an assassin.
Comic creators Way and Bá are on board as co-executive producers, with Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist series, Death Note) credited as creator.
All ten episodes of The Umbrella Academy, starring Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, David Castañeda, Aidan Gallagher and Cameron Britton, will be hitting Netflix on February 15, 2019.
Synopsis for The Umbrella Academy:
On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. But not everything went according to plan. In their teenage years, the family fractured, and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya, and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death. But the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
