The first trailer has arrived for Unsane, the upcoming iPhone-shot horror-thriller from director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven, Magic Mike).
Claire Foy (The Crown) stars as a young woman who escapes a stalker by leaving her hometown and starting a new job. Things go from bad to worse when she’s involuntarily committed to a mental institution, where it appears this stalker works. Is this a huge ploy by one deranged man? Or… could this institution be the right place for her?
There have been a number of filmmakers that have filmed using iPhones – Sean Baker, Michel Gondry and Park Chan-wook among them. Soderbergh is the latest to experiment with the Apple device, using it to shoot his first stab at the horror genre. Unsane was made in secret, on the cheap, and it looks great. Foy looks to be putting in a strong turn in the paranoia-driven pic and the iPhone camera’s texture and limitations looks to suit this type of narrative/setting perfectly. We’ll see.
It certainly marks a change of pace for screenwriters Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, whose previous credits include Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, Just My Luck and The Spy Next Door.
Unsane, also starring Juno Temple, Jay Pharaoh, Joshua Leonard, Aimee Mullins, and Amy Irving, opens in the U.S. on March 23 and arrives in Australia on April 25.
