Anne Hathaway is having quite the 2026, and her next film looks ready to make audiences suspicious of every glance, twitch and half-open doorway. Amazon MGM Studios has released the official trailer for Verity, a seductive and potentially nasty psychological thriller pairing Hathaway with Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. Johnson stars as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer handed what sounds like a career-changing opportunity: completing the books of hugely successful author Verity Crawford (Hathaway), who has been left unable to speak or move following a devastating accident.

Naturally, moving into Verity’s remote home to sift through her work turns out to be a terrible idea.
Lowen soon begins catching glimpses of Verity apparently moving when nobody else is looking. Strange moments pile up, the house becomes increasingly unnerving, and the supposedly incapacitated author starts looking a lot less helpless than advertised.
Is Lowen imagining things? Is Verity putting on an elaborate performance? Either way, something is very wrong inside that house. “This place is insane,” Johnson says in the trailer. “I feel like I’m losing my mind.”
It doesn’t help that Lowen and Verity’s husband, Jeremy (Hartnett), are becoming increasingly attracted to one another. Cue up a dose of lust, obsession and suspicion.
Colleen Hoover Gets Twisted
Verity is adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover, whose previous adaptations include It Ends with Us, Regretting You, and Reminders of Him.
Michael Showalter directs, reuniting with Hathaway after 2024 romantic drama The Idea of You. Showalter’s credits also include The Big Sick, Hello, My Name Is Doris, The Lovebirds, and Spoiler Alert. The screenplay comes from Nick Antosca, known for darker genre projects including Channel Zero, Brand New Cherry Flavor and Antlers.

And then there’s Hathaway, who apparently decided one major film this year simply wasn’t enough.
Verity continues a huge 2026 run that has also included Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, with sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street also on her slate. Not a bad year.
Hathaway also serves as a producer on Verity, with Johnson also on board as executive producer.
Verity Release Date
Verity opens in Australian cinemas on October 1 and U.S. cinemas on October 2.
