Marvel has released the official trailer for VisionQuest, with Paul Bettany returning as the synthezoid and James Spader making his long-awaited MCU comeback as Ultron. And if having your genocidal creator return wasn’t complicated enough, Vision appears to have him living inside his head. Watch the trailer above and get the details below.
The trailer was another of Marvel Studios’ major reveals at D23, where Bettany and Spader helped unveil the new look at the upcoming Disney+ series. Scroll down to check out some of the D23 footage Marvel shared on social media.

Vision Is Having an Identity Crisis
Picking up the thread left hanging at the end of WandaVision, the series follows the rebuilt White Vision after his memories were restored and he flew away from Westview to figure out exactly what that meant.
Apparently, having someone’s memories and actually feeling like that person are two very different things. “I was an Avenger, but I’m not a hero anymore,” Vision says in the trailer. “I have his face, but not his virtue.”
That existential problem appears to provide the heart of VisionQuest, which also takes us inside a trippy mental world where those memories — and several familiar pieces of Marvel technology — have effectively become people.
His mind is represented by a sprawling mansion populated by human personifications of familiar MCU AIs and robots. James D’Arcy, who previously played Edwin Jarvis in Agent Carter, appears as J.A.R.V.I.S.; Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y.; Emily Hampshire is E.D.I.T.H.; and Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer portray D.U.M.-E and U.
And then there’s the particularly unwelcome resident.
Ultron Is Back — and Daddy Issues Are In Store
Spader’s Ultron hasn’t been seen in live-action since Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, but VisionQuest isn’t simply bringing the murderous AI back in the form audiences remember.
As the trailer shows, we’re getting Ultron as Spader himself, a human avatar existing inside Vision’s mind. Considering Ultron played a rather significant role in Vision’s creation, the setup gives the pair plenty of unresolved father-son baggage to work through — although therapy would presumably be much easier if one participant hadn’t previously tried to wipe out humanity.
Things don’t stay confined to philosophical conversations for long. The footage also offers us a look at Ultron in robotic form again and teases a direct confrontation between creator and creation, suggesting whatever is buried inside Vision may have a very real way of getting out. “Free us all,” Ultron tells him. “And save your son.”
Yes, Vision’s increasingly complicated family tree also comes back into play. Following the events of Agatha All Along, Ruaridh Mollica appears as Thomas Shepherd, the teenager seemingly carrying the soul of Wanda and Vision’s son Tommy Maximoff.
Tommy and Vision are seen together, although this doesn’t exactly look like an easy family reunion. Tommy quickly realises that his father has Ultron rattling around inside his head, giving Vision another very personal reason to work out exactly who — and what — he has become.
There’s plenty happening beyond the Maximoff family drama as well. The footage teases new threats, a trip to Madripoor and Todd Stashwick’s mercenary Paladin hunting Vision, while the action eventually sees Bettany’s character move away from his stark white appearance towards a more traditional Vision look.
Created and showrun by Star Trek: Picard‘s Terry Matalas, VisionQuest has been positioned as the third and final chapter in the television trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along.
