The first trailer has dropped for War for the Planet of the Apes, the third film in the fantastic franchise reboot led by Andy Serkis as Caesar.
It’s been quite a journey for the intelligent, highly emotive chimp. Learning sign language with James Franco feels like a lifetime ago, and indeed, Caesar isn’t the young, kind-hearted ape he once was. The conflict between apes and humans has been building, and it’s about to reach fever pitch with Caesar and the Colonel (Woody Harrelson) lead their respective races in a deciding confrontation.
Save perhaps those titles, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes have been stand-out blockbusters, big-budget outings offering up excitement, depth, drama and a ton of heart. With Dawn director Matt Reeves back at the helm, Serkis back in that award-deserving mo-cap role, Harrelson on board as a troubled-looking villain, and what looks like one hell of a dramatic plot, this could be the third winner in a franchise that has gone from strength to strength thus far.
Boy, what a week of trailers.
War for the Planet of the Apes, also starring Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller, Karin Konoval & Terry Notary, arrives in Australia on July 13 and opens in the US on July 14, 2017.
