A new TV spot has dropped for Warcraft, giving us another look at what could be a cliche-filled bit of CG fun.
Based on the beloved video game universe, Warcraft tells the story of two civilizations that go head-to-head. Unsurprisingly, two heroes from opposing sides find themselves on a collision course.
It may only be 30 seconds long, but the promo below does an impressive job at ticking off the requisite boxes for a very familiar outing. Avatar certainly comes to mind, with strong visuals and a lavish production uncomfortably standing under the weight of a stock standard screenplay. Then again, we could be wrong. Maybe the promos are simply shoving forth a much simpler version of the narrative’s punchlines to draw in audience, and WHAM!, you’ve got a ton of surprises in store. Fingers crossed.
Hope is high for this one. Video game adaptations are yet to start an uphill climb (we’re very intrigued at what Assassin’s Creed will deliver), but Duncan Jones, who previously directed Moon and Source Code, could be the one to kickstart a movement.
Warcraft, starring Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky and Daniel Wu, opens in the U.S. on June 10.
Synopsis for Warcraft:
The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.
So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.
