‘Wednesday’: Netflix Officially Announces Live-Action ‘Addams Family’ Spinoff Series with Tim Burton

Paramount Pictures

Netflix has been circling this project for a few months now, but call it official: Wednesday is heading to the streamer.

The company has announced it has landed a live-action Addams Family spinoff series titled Wednesday, set to focus on the iconic character that is Wednesday Addams. The show comes from Smallville and Into the Badlands creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. It’s also going to mark the television debut for director Tim Burton, known for his brand of gothic-fantasy features such as Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, 1989’s Batman and its sequel Batman Returns.

The eight-episode series, described as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery”, will be set around Wednesday’s years as a student at the peculiar Nevermore Academy. The plot will find her attempting to master her emerging psychic ability, stop the monstrous killing spree terrorising her local town, and solving a supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years earlier. All that, while navigating her new and very tangled relationships of the strange and diverse student body.

“When we first heard Al Gough and Miles Millar’s pitch for Wednesday we were struck, like an arrow from a crossbow, right in our hearts. They nailed the tone, the spirit and the characters, but gave us a fresh way into this story,”” said Teddy Biaselli, Netflix’s director of original series.

“We then got the call that visionary director and lifelong Addams Family fan Tim Burton wanted to make his television directorial debut with this series. Tim has had a history of telling empowering stories about social outsiders like Edward Scissorhands, Lydia Deetz, and Batman. And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and her spooky classmates at Nevermore Academy.”

The Addams Family characters were created by American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938 and first appeared in single-panel cartoons, some of which were originally published in The New Yorker. The bizarre American family has been the focus of various works over the years, including a classic ’60s series (where Wednesday was portrayed by Lisa Loring); two live-action films in the early ’90s (Christina Ricci, pictured above, played Wednesday in 1991’s The Addams Family and 1993’s Addams Family Values); and a 2019 CG-animated feature (with Chloë Grace Moretz voicing Wednesday), which will have its sequel released this year.

Netflix released the following Wednesday teaser poster with their announcement.
