The official teaser trailer has arrived for Steven Spielberg‘s long-awaited (the film was delayed by around a year thanks to the pandemic) take on classic musical West Side Story.
Ansel Elgort, up-and-comer Rachel Zegler (Shazam! Fury of the Gods) and Corey Stoll are among the cast members of this musical drama, a reimagining of the 1957 Broadway musical that was itself inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The plot follows the rivalry between two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds: the Jets, a white gang, and the Sharks, from Puerto Rico. Elgort and Zegler play Tony and María, who find themselves in the midst of forbidden love as the two sides war it out.
Memories of the 1961 feature adaptation, which won a whopping 10 Oscars including Best Picture, will no doubt come flooding back with the snippets on display in the teaser, which first aired during the Oscars. On a visual level, the film unsurprisingly looks gorgeous, with Spielberg reuniting with longtime cinematographer Janusz Kaminski (Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan). We’ll see if Spielberg’s vision of the musical provides much that will surprise those well versed, but this should at the very least be a visual and sonic treat.
West Side Story, also starring Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Josh Andrés Rivera, Ana Isabelle, Brian d’Arcy James, and Rita Moreno (Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner of the ’61 film), will open in Australian cinemas on December 9th and hit US cinemas on December 10th.
