Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, Whoopi Goldberg and many more star in When We Rise, the upcoming seven-episode event series set to air on the US ABC Television Network.
Boasting filmmaker Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk) as executive producer and director of one episode, When We Rise chronicles the gay rights movement in the United States, beginning with the Stonewall riots in 1969.
No doubt about it, this is a deeply important period in history, and it’s certainly a timely discussion-starter to have in the US at a time like this. The issue, unfortunately, lies with this trailer, which goes the overly sentimental route and rams home its – admittedly well-intentioned – messages in obvious, sledgehammer-like style. That being said, there’s certainly a lot of talent involved here, including Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who has penned the entire series and is attached as director on two episodes. Let’s wait and see.
When We Rise, also starring Michael Kenneth Williams, Rosie O’Donnell, and David Hyde Pierce, among many others, will air on ABC Television Network in February 2017.
