The follow-up to Wicked has officially been given a new title: Wicked: For Good. Universal Pictures will release the second chapter of the two-film musical adaptation in US cinemas on 21 November 2025.
The new title directly references the fan-favourite duet “For Good,” a pivotal number from the stage production. The song, performed by lead characters Glinda and Elphaba, reflects on the lasting impact their complex friendship has had on their lives. “You will be changed,” the film’s official Instagram account teased alongside the title reveal.
Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the Wicked films are adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Both films aim to explore the untold origins of The Wizard of Oz characters, expanding on the well-loved 2003 stage musical.
The first Wicked film has proven to be a box office success, recently surpassing $US520 million globally in just its fourth weekend. It’s now the highest-grossing movie based on a Broadway musical domestically in the US.
While those not well versed with the stage production might be worried about potential spoilers for the follow-up, co-writer Winnie Holzman, who also penned the book for the stage show, appears unconcerned. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Holzman joked, “It [the stage musical] didn’t open yesterday, it’s been running for 21 years.”
The sequel will see the return of key characters alongside Erivo and Grande, including Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Ethan Slater as Boq, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The ensemble also features Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and Bowen Yang.
Wicked has received four nominations at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress – Musical or Comedy (Erivo), Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture (Grande), and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
