Olivia Colman has found the perfect husband. He is handsome, devoted, useful around the house… and made entirely out of wicker. The official U.S. and U.K. trailers have arrived for Wicker, a proudly bizarre, very funny and strangely romantic fantasy that pairs Colman with an almost unrecognisable Alexander Skarsgård. The two trailers feature slightly different footage, so we’ve included both: the U.S. version above and the U.K. trailer below. Read on for what to know.

Peter Dinklage Makes Olivia Colman a Husband

Directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, Wicker marks the pair’s second feature following Save Yourselves! and adapts Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story The Wicker Husband.

Colman plays the Fisherwoman, a blunt and proudly unconventional woman living on the outskirts of a rigid seaside village. She keeps the community fed but receives little gratitude in return, with the locals instead mocking her for being unmarried and perpetually smelling of fish.

When someone asks whether she has caught herself a husband, she dismisses love as more burden than prize. That does not mean she intends to spend the rest of her life alone, however. Fed up with the village and its narrow expectations, she visits the mysterious local Basketmaker, played by Peter Dinklage, with an unusual commission: build her a husband.

The result is Skarsgård’s Wicker Husband, a towering handcrafted creation who mysteriously comes to life with the manners, physique and unwavering affection of the Fisherwoman’s dreams. He carries her catch, repairs her home and declares, “You are the reason I live and breathe.”

He is also, as the trailers make immediately clear, able to satisfy needs that go well beyond household maintenance.

A Wicker Husband Causes Village-Wide Chaos

Their union quickly becomes the talk of the village. While some residents are horrified by the idea of a woman marrying a man woven from plant material, others become increasingly fascinated by him. As one particularly intrigued villager reports, “I heard that he’s strong as a tree and just as hard.”

The most visibly affected appears to be the Tailor’s Wife, played by Elizabeth Debicki. Her curiosity begins to spiral as stories spread about the Wicker Husband’s strength, kindness and other reportedly impressive qualities.

The supporting cast also includes Richard E. Grant, Marli Siu and Nabhaan Rizwan.

Alexander Skarsgård Finally Achieves His Wicker Dream

Skarsgård underwent a substantial practical transformation for the role, wearing an intricately constructed costume and facial prosthetics created by New Zealand’s Wētā Workshop, the special-effects company behind The Lord of the Rings films.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the actor joked that the part allowed him to fulfil a very particular acting ambition.

“Most male actors dream of playing Hamlet at some point in their career. I never did,” Skarsgård said. “My dream was always to have nipples made out of wicker.”

The costume presented some unusual challenges, particularly during the film’s intimate scenes. Directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson said the sequences required extensive preparation, with every shot storyboarded, rehearsed and reconsidered before filming. Intimacy coordinator Ita O’Brien worked with the actors, who tackled many of the scenes during their first week on set.

The filmmakers admitted to having some anxiety about whether the elaborate design would work on screen, but those concerns disappeared once Skarsgård began performing.

“Alex’s performance, while incredibly nuanced and understated, was very technically and physically challenging, and it’s really the marriage of the prosthetic and the performance that sells the whole thing,” they said. “Once he was walking and talking as the Wicker Husband, we knew the spectacle, the romance, the whole heart of the movie was in safe hands.”

Skarsgård has described the character as a significant departure from the conflicted and darker figures he is often drawn to playing.

“To play this good-hearted, good-natured, sweet, morally righteous character was scary to me,” he said at the film’s Sundance premiere. “I’m not really comfortable doing that. I don’t have anything to tap into when it comes to that. So it was a stretch as an actor.”

Olivia Colman Praises Skarsgård and the Film’s Originality

Colman was similarly enthusiastic about the screenplay, calling Wicker “one of the best and most original scripts” she had read in a long time. She also serves as one of the film’s producers.

“I loved the Fisherwoman,” Colman told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s the only one not toeing the line.”

The Oscar winner also praised Skarsgård’s physical and emotional transformation.

“Alex is funny, intelligent, and beautiful anyway — in the wicker costume, he’s breathtaking,” she said. “Everything is exaggerated; he’s a work of art. Alex fills the Wicker Husband with a beautiful soul.”

Strong Reviews Ahead of the Release Date

Wicker premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and has earned strong early reviews. At the time of writing, it holds a 91 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score from 22 critic reviews.

The film will open in select U.S. theatres on October 23, 2026, before expanding nationwide on October 30. It will also arrive in U.K. and Irish cinemas on October 30.

Australian audiences will have an earlier opportunity to see it at the Melbourne International Film Festival, where Wicker will receive its Australian premiere and begin screening on August 8. A wider Australian theatrical release date has yet to be announced.
