Will Smith is set to star in Bounty, an upcoming action-thriller based on a spec script bought by Paramount Pictures.
THR broke the news, reporting that Smith is to play a man in Boston wrongly convicted of murder. Determined to prove his innocence, he escapes from prison, only to have an ultra-hard time escaping the people aiming to cash the $10 million bounty put on his head by the victim’s widow.
The Sascha Penn-written screenplay will be produced by Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, alongside Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner.
There hasn’t been a director chosen quite yet, but there’s still plenty of time – since upcoming Smith-starring films Concussion and Suicide Squad are still in development.
Screenwriter Penn is on a bit of a roll lately. Apart from Bounty, Penn has…penned (sorry) The Idolmaker, an MGM production to be directed by Jeff Chan, and he’s sold pitches Yakuza Vs. Mafia, bought by Good Universe, and The Ditch, a sci-fi spec bought by Warner Bros.
Smith will next be seen in Focus, which will hit the U.S. on February 27.
