StudioCanal has released the first official trailer for Winchester, a true story inspired horror film starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke.
Directed by Aussie helmers Michael and Peter Spierig, Winchester finds Mirren playing firearm heiress Sarah Winchester, who believed she was being haunted by the souls of those killed by the Winchester repeating rifle. Following the sudden deaths of her husband and child, Sarah became obsessed with building a massive labyrinthian mansion that she believed would keep the spirits at bay. Aussie export Jason Clarke plays a skeptical psychiatrist that discovers her beliefs may not be totally unfounded.
The Spierigs have an interesting resume boasting mostly solid pictures, from indie zombie-comedy Undead, to vampire picture Daybreakers, to sci-fi twist-fest Predestination, to the soon-to-be-released Saw film Jigsaw. We’ll see how the latter unfolds, but this period spook-a-thon is looking like a nicely crafted outing, albeit with perhaps overly familiar touches. The two strong leads certainly help. We’ll see.
Winchester, also starring Sarah Snook and Angus Sampson, will open in the US on February 2 and arrives in Australian cinemas on February 22, 2018.
Official synopsis for Winchester:
Inspired by a true story, WINCHESTER follows firearm heiress Sarah Winchester (portrayed by Academy Award® winner Helen Mirren) who was convinced that she was haunted by the souls killed at the hands of the Winchester repeating rifle. After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, she threw herself into the 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week construction of an enormous mansion designed to keep the evil spirits at bay. But when skeptical San Francisco psychiatrist Eric Price (Jason Clarke) is dispatched to the estate to evaluate her state of mind, he discovers that her obsession may not be so insane after all. WINCHESTER will take audiences inside the labyrinth like house that is believed to be one of the most haunted places in the world.
