Marvel’s Wonder Man has been cancelled at Disney+, with the studio reversing its previously announced season 2 renewal just four months after confirming the Hollywood-set superhero comedy would return. The news ends the series after one eight-episode season, despite strong reviews and an Emmy nomination for star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Disney announced the renewal in March, roughly two months after the entire first season arrived on the streaming service. Abdul-Mateen had been expected to return as actor-turned-superhero Simon Williams, alongside Ben Kingsley as the brilliantly chaotic Trevor Slattery.
Variety, which first broke the cancellation news, reports that a writers’ room for season 2 was never opened. The show’s writers have now been released to pursue other projects.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Says ‘The Show Worked’
Abdul-Mateen met the decision with more acceptance than anger, hitting social media to thank viewers for supporting the series and making it clear that he considers the show a success regardless of its unexpectedly short run.
“Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2,” he wrote on Instagram. “(And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww!) That’s life, right? Everything will shake out. I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other.”
The actor said he had watched YouTube reactions alongside fans and received messages from viewers who found encouragement in Simon’s struggle to keep pursuing his ambitions.
“The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it. I could see it on the faces of the Youtube reactors (because I watched along with y’all this time. Shoutout to y’all) and I can see in the messages I get saying how the show reminded some of you not to give up, and I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day. So, thinking of you all today. I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS.”
That final line refers to Abdul-Mateen’s nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The nomination follows his Emmy-winning performance in HBO’s Watchmen, giving him Primetime Emmy recognition for live-action roles in both Marvel and DC television projects.
Strong Reviews Were Not Enough
Wonder Man was warmly received upon its January debut, earning a 91% critics’ score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley’s chemistry was widely praised, as was the show’s comparatively intimate approach to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its affectionate satire of Hollywood.
Disney has not publicly explained why it reversed the renewal. The company did not release its own viewership figures, although Nielsen reported that the series generated 618 million viewing minutes during its opening week. That placed it at No. 8 among streaming originals for the week of January 26 to February 1, but it disappeared from the chart the following week.
Created by Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the series followed aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams as he pursued a potentially career-changing role in director Von Kovak’s remake of the fictional superhero film Wonder Man. His path crossed with struggling veteran actor Trevor Slattery, placing two performers at very different points in their careers within the increasingly chaotic production.
Cretton directed the first two episodes, while Guest served as showrunner. The cast also included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby.
The cancellation may not mark the end of Simon Williams or Trevor Slattery. According to Variety’s sources, characters introduced or featured in Wonder Man could still appear elsewhere in future Marvel projects, although no specific appearances have been announced.
All eight episodes of Wonder Man remain available to stream on Disney+.
