First ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Trailer Introduces the World’s First Mutant

The first official trailer has arrived for X-Men: Apocalypse, Bryan Singer’s follow-up to last year’s fantastic X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Worshiped as a God since the beginning of civilisation, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), considered to the world’s first mutant, awakens after thousands of years. He isn’t pleased with the world he finds, and goes about recruiting powerful mutants to help him create a new world order. Magneto, Raven, Professor X, and a team of young X-Men find themselves caught in the unfolding events.

This is decidedly epic stuff. The escalating clashes between Michael Fassbender’s Magneto and James McAvoy’s Professor X have come to this, as has the troubled relationship between Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence’s Raven.

Apart from introducing some new characters, such as Olivia Munn’s Psylocke and Rochelle Okoye’s Plague, this momentous next chapter also introduces younger versions of X-Men we’ve come to know. Sophie Turner, known for playing Sansa Stark in HBO’s hugely popular series Game of Thrones, plays a young Jean Grey; Alexandra Shipp, who played R&B superstar Aaliyah in Lifetime’s Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, plays a young Storm; and Tye Sheridan, who impressed with his performance opposite Matthew McConaughey in Jeff Nichols’ Mud, plays a young Cyclops.

Singer is right at home in the X-Men universe, having kicked off the cinematic franchise with the first two X-Men films and returning with Days of Future Past. At least from the trailer, it looks like we’re going to be in for one hell of a chapter.

X-Men: Apocalypse, also starring Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Rose Byrne, Lucas Till, Olivia Munn, Ben Hardy, and Lana Condor, hits Australia on May 19 and the U.S. on May 27.

Synopsis for X-Men: Apocalypse:

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
