New ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Trailer Reveals a Big Death

A big new trailer has arrived for upcoming X-Men film Dark Phoenix.

Get ready for what looks like one of the most dramatic X-Men movies yet. The trailer kicks of with Sophie Turner’s powerful mutant Jean Grey, aka Phoenix, crying and saying, “Why did you make me do that?” We then see Phoenix take down a key member of the team.

If you want to see the moment first, check out the trailer before scrolling further down for what director Simon Kinberg had to say about the character’s death.

Goodbye, Mystique. Yes, Jennifer Lawrence’s character dies at the hand of a rapidly-spiralling-out-of-control Jean Grey.

Speaking to EW, Kinberg said that they decided to unveil this plot turn “to primarily show that this is a movie that is unlike other X-Men movies. It’s a movie where shocking things happen, where intense, dramatic things happen. People don’t just fall off buildings and dust themselves off and walk away”

Kinberg said Mystique’s death is key in showing just how much of a threat Jean’s powers pose to not only the world, but to the X-Men themselves.

“I felt it was the strongest, most dramatic thing for the movie, and sometimes you have to make those kinds of hard decisions to service the larger story. And the larger story really is Jean cracking up, losing control because she’s more powerful than anyone else in the world. To dramatize that properly, you have to show real loss, you have to show real pain and show real threat and menace,” Kinberg said.

“I didn’t want to do that by her blowing up a building with anonymous people in it. It had to feel really personal for the X-Men, and I wanted it to be something that would fracture the X-Men as well. Mystique is someone who in our universe has been part of the X-Men and has been part of Magneto’s world. Her death impacts literally everybody.”

Add in Jessica Chastain as a mysterious and very powerful new villain, some grand visuals and that impressive cast, and they’ve got us signed up for what could be on offer here. It seems like the buzz hasn’t been to loud for this; guess we’ll see.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix, also starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Evan Peters, arrives in Australia on June 6 and hits the US on June 7.
