Yellowstone has proven to be such a hit that a “Yellowstone universe” is now officially in the works. Get ready for Y: 1883, a prequel series that will explore the origins of the Dutton family.
ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Group have announced an extension of their working relationship with Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone‘s co-creator, executive producer and director of all nine episodes of season 1. Sheridan is also know for writing Sicario (which earned him an Oscar nomination) and Hell or High Water, writing-directing Wind River, and for playing Deputy Chief David Hale in Sons of Anarchy.
The deal will find Sheridan in a multi-year pact to create exclusive multi-platform content with MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, including five cycles per year of scripted and procedural series. Among the projects: Y: 1883, to be executive produced by Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari.
As per the official plot description:
Y: 1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.

“I am excited to continue the story of Yellowstone,” Sheridan said in a statement, “and thank you to Chris, Keith and David for allowing me to keep on expanding the family for the fans.”
Said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV Entertainment: “Taylor Sheridan is a visionary creative whose work has reinvented genres and amassed fan bases around the globe; we are thrilled he calls ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment his home. We couldn’t be more excited to build upon our partnership with him, expand the Yellowstone universe and showcase Taylor’s boundless talent across all of our brands and platforms.”
ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Group report that the third season of Yellowstone was the most watched season premiere on cable in two years, drawing record-breaking numbers of 6.5M total viewers in live +3.
Also on the horizon for Sheridan is Those Who Wish Me Dead, an Angelina Jolie-starring thriller he directed and co-wrote. Nicholas Hoult, Jon Bernthal, Aidan Gillen and Tyler Perry are among the cast of the film, which follows a teenage murder witness who finds himself pursued by twin assassins in the Montana wilderness with a survival expert tasked with protecting him and a forest fire threatening to consume them all. That film arrives in Australia on May 13th and hits US cinemas and HBO Max on May 14th.
