‘You’ Season 5 Official Trailer: Netflix Promises Joe Goldberg will Face a Killer Ending

Netflix has released the official trailer for You season 5, the highly anticipated final chapter of the hit psychological thriller series. After years of leaving a bloody trail across Los Angeles, the suburbs of San Francisco, and London, Joe Goldberg returns to New York City—where his story of obsession and murder began. But this time, he’s a billionaire, a husband, and a father… and still hiding deadly secrets. Watch the trailer above and learn more below.

You Season 5 Brings Penn Badgley Back to Mooney’s Bookstore and His Past

In You season 5, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) appears to be living the life he’s always wanted. He’s married to Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), helping to run the powerful Lockwood Corporation, and raising his son Henry. He’s also reclaimed Mooney’s bookstore, the site of his first crimes in Season 1. But the past is never far behind in the You universe.

For Badgley, the final season’s production brought its own sense of nostalgia. Filming took place at Silvercup Studios in Queens, the same sound stages where he filmed Gossip Girl. Speaking to Netflix Tudum, Badgley said, “Returning to the Mooney set on these stages was particularly poignant because this is where we shot Gossip Girl. And I hadn’t really been back here except for one day of camera testing a long time ago.”

Sitting in the elaborate set of Joe and Kate’s bedroom, Badgley reflected on how far both he and his character have come. “So it was creating new memories but with something that is already also quite iconic. Definitely very interesting just being back here, on several levels.”

Joe Goldberg’s New Life in You Season 5 Comes With Deadly Consequences

While Joe seems to have found stability, fans of the Netflix series You know better than to trust appearances. This time, Joe is surrounded by the Lockwood family’s power plays. Kate’s twin sisters, Reagan and Maddie (both played by Anna Camp), and her half-brother Teddy (Griffin Matthews), are all vying for control of the family empire.

“He’s very much in a pit of vipers,” executive producer Michael Foley told Tudum. “They are every bit products of Tom Lockwood, who was a Machiavellian, corrupt son of a bitch.”

Adding more complexity is Joe’s relationship with Bronte (Madeline Brewer), a playwright he meets at Mooney’s. Brewer’s character represents another test for Joe, who is still battling his darker instincts. Badgley praised his new co-star, saying, “I think she’s exceptionally talented, and we’re lucky to have her this season.”

As co-showrunner Justin W. Lo explained, the season centres on Joe’s inner conflict. “Can he be the old Joe and the new Joe? It’s the essential question of the season,” Lo said. And as Joe’s public profile grows, his anonymity disappears. “Now that he is well known in New York, social media is on him,” Lo added. “That’s something fun for us to explore.”

Penn Badgley Reflects on Saying Goodbye to Joe Goldberg

“It’s bittersweet, as anything is. It’s probably a lot sweeter than it is bitter,” said Badgley, who, after playing Joe Goldberg for seven years, is ready to wrap things up. “You’re in this same space and doing this same work for just about seven years and you love it, but you’re happy to move on. It’s time for him to lay down, to stop, to put that knife down.”

Joe’s story will be coming to a bloody conclusion. Whether redemption or retribution awaits him, well, we’ll find out when You season 5 premieres on Netflix on April 24th.
