The upcoming Batman movie has its Catwoman.
Joining the long-in-the-works DC movie The Batman is Zoë Kravitz, who has been officially cast as none other than Catwoman, aka Selina Kyle. Kravitz joins Robert Pattinson, who will be starring as Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Commisionor Gordon, and Jonah Hill as a villain. The latter is rumoured to be The Riddler, although that hasn’t been confirmed as yet.
According to THR, the actress went through “a rigorous testing process” that saw her competing with Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049), Ella Balinska (upcoming Charlie’s Angels) and Eiza González (Baby Driver). They all read with Pattinson during testing and were lined up as the top four last week.
Kravitz will be taking on the role that has been previously been inhabited by, among others, Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway, Cameron Bivondova (in the Gotham series) and Halle Berry, the latter of whom starred in the ill-received 2004 film Catwoman. Kravitz, whose credits include Mad Max: Fury Road, the Fantastic Beasts movies, and Big Little Lies, does have some experience with the character having voiced Catwoman in The Lego Batman Movie.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, although it has been said that the film will feature a large rogue’s gallery for Batman to take on. Expect some very interesting casting announcements for more villains in the near future.
Directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, War for the Planet of the Apes), The Batman is scheduled to arrive in Australia on June 24 and will open in US cinemas on June 25, 2021.
