Watch the trailer for Bird Box Barcelona, an expansion of the post-apocalyptic world we were introduced to in Netflix‘s Sandra Bullock-starring thriller Bird Box.

We head to the Spanish city of Barcelona this time around, following Sebastian (Mario Casas) as he navigates his own survival in a world that’s been decimated. As we were introduced to in the 2018 film, the population has been ravaged by entities that cause people who look at them to kill themselves. As Sebastian forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.

As for when exactly this chapter is set, when looking at the first film’s timeline, producer Dylan Clark had the following to say to EW:

“The events that we see Malorie/Sandra Bullock endure in the original Bird Box are happening at the same time that Sebastian/Mario Casas is going through his journey. Being in Barcelona gave us a chance to see how surviving this intense threat in an iconic city poses different challenges.”

The film is written and directed by filmmaking brothers David and Àlex Pastor, who certainly have experience making apocalyptic thrillers having previously helmed Carriers and The Last Days. The cast also includes Georgina Campbell, Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, and Celia Freijeiro.

A bit surprising that it’s taken this long to get a Bird Box follow-up, considering the first film became one of Netflix’s most-watched films within the first 28 days of release. We’ll see what we’re in for when Bird Box Barcelona begins streaming on Netflix on July 14th.
