Take a look at the teaser trailer that’s been released for Gaslit, an upcoming limited series led by Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Sean Penn.

Based on the first season of the acclaimed Slow Burn podcast, Gaslit is being described as “a modern take on Watergate” that places the spotlight on a number of the forgotten characters that had different roles to play in this scandalous period. Specifically, the plot focuses on Martha Mitchell, an Arkansan socialite and wife to Attorney General John Mitchell, played by an almost unrecognisable Penn. Martha found herself in the sights of the White House and her own Nixon-loyal husband after becoming the first person to publicly sound the alarm on the President’s involvement in Watergate.

The cast includes Dan Stevens as White House Counsel John Dean, Betty Gilpin as his wife, Mo Dean, Shea Whigham as G. Gordon Liddy, and Darby Camp as Marty Mitchell, Martha’s daughter.

“The goal in making this project has always been to bring a real humanity to this subject, which yields a far richer and more relatable story than the standard male-driven political dramas about the period,” said Gaslit creator, executive producer and showrunner Robbie Pickering, whose credits include directing 2015 horror-comedy Freaks of Nature and working as an executive story editor on Mr. Robot.

“I can’t wait for viewers to experience the extraordinary performances in this remarkable ensemble, led by Julia Roberts, brought to life in this thrilling, stranger-than-fiction tale of marriage, love, betrayal, and ultimately, hope.”

All six episodes were directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Matt Ross, who helmed much-loved Viggo Mortensen film Captain Fantastic. Ross is also on board as executive producer, along with Roberts under her banner Red Om Films, and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail (as part of his overall deal with UCP) and Chad Hamilton under their production banner Esmail Corp.

A potentially riveting watch here, with what could be one very meaty role for Roberts. Mark the date: Gaslit will be hitting Stan in Australia and Starz in the U.S. on April 24th.
