Keanu Reeves is stepping away from headshots and hitlists and stepping into something a bit more… divine. The official teaser trailer has arrived for Good Fortune, a comedy directed and written by Aziz Ansari, marking his feature debut. And yes, it involves Reeves as an angel – a well-meaning, hopelessly awkward one. Watch the teaser above and learn more below.
In Good Fortune, Reeves plays Gabriel — a celestial being who’s tired of his basic assignment. “Is there any way I can have more meaningful duties?” he asks in the trailer. “I want to guide people. I want to change their lives.” Sandra Oh, playing fellow angel Martha, delivers a bit of spiritual wisdom: “To save a lost soul, you have to find a lost soul.”
More on Screen Realm:
His solution? To meddle in the lives of Arj (Ansari), a down-on-his-luck gig worker trying to get by in Los Angeles, and Jeff, a wealthy venture capitalist (played by Seth Rogen). “Wait,” Arj blurts out, “You’re telling me I have a budget guardian angel?” Gabriel responds, “Kinda.”
The trailer doesn’t drop the key plot detail… so, maybe skip this paragraph if you wanted to wait for the official trailer (where the plot will likely be clarified). Gabriel decides to body swap Arj and Jeff, and what starts as a cosmic experiment in empathy turns into a disaster — especially when Arj realises he doesn’t want to switch back.
Ansari isn’t just in a lead role — he’s wearing a number of hats. He’s the film’s director (making his feature directorial debut), sole credited screenwriter, and producer alongside Anthony Katagas and longtime collaborator Alan Yang. While it’s his first time directing a feature, Ansari’s no stranger behind the camera, having previously helmed eleven episodes of his acclaimed Netflix series Master of None and his 2022 stand-up special Aziz Ansari: Nightclub Comedian.
“This movie is about what a lot of people are doing — struggling,” Ansari said on stage during a CinemaCon presentation last year. “If you can write about things that everyone is dealing with that no one is talking about, you’re in a good area.”
Good Fortune opens in Australian cinemas on October 16 and in U.S. cinemas on October 17.
