‘Heart Eyes’ 1-MINUTE MOVIE REVIEW: Love, Blood, and Missed Potential

Heart Eyes tries to be both a romantic comedy and a slasher horror film. Does it work? Well…

This is a self-aware genre mash-up that leans both into the rom-com and horror slasher tropes, with a wink toward parody. I like the idea, I like the ambition, but, for me, the result was underwhelming. Instead of putting these familiar recipes together to cook up something new, it simply recycles familiar beats. Yes, the clichés are self-aware—but they’re still clichés.

As a rom-com, I found it too predictable, and the dialogue way too clunky. And as a slasher, the kills weren’t creative enough or gory enough to really stand out. And I also found that the mystery surrounding who the killer was to be pretty uninspired.

All that being said, this is still light, overall serviceable enough entertainment. The two leads are likeable enough to carry some of those overly cutesy rom-com moments, and there are one or two decent kills.

Heart Eyes wants to play within the confines of the genres, and ends up being confined by their weaker examples.
