Josh Hartnett is heading to the edge of the world — and into the path of a mysterious menace from the deep.
Netflix has announced a new limited series led by the Oppenheimer and Trap star, a still-untitled project set in a remote Newfoundland town that finds itself under siege by a mysterious sea creature. Created by Jesse McKeown (The Umbrella Academy, The Sinner), the show promises to blend chilling genre elements with grounded emotional stakes.
“When a mysterious sea creature terrorizes a remote Newfoundland town,” reads Netflix’s description, “a hard-bitten fisherman must fight to protect his family, his community, and his vanishing way of life.”

McKeown is serving as showrunner and executive producer, working alongside a team that includes Jessica Rhoades (Station Eleven, Black Mirror), Chris Hatcher (Sweet Angel Baby), Sharon Hall (The Expanse), and Hartnett himself.
Netflix Canada content directors Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury praised the project, saying in a statement, “Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama. We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience and adaptability.”
The writing team also includes Karen Walton (Orphan Black), Perry Chafe (Saint Pierre), and Natty Zavitz (Edging). Episodes will be directed by Jamie Childs (The Sandman, His Dark Materials), Helen Shaver (The Penguin, Station Eleven), and Stephen Dunn (Closet Monster, Queer as Folk).
Filming will take place in Newfoundland, with provincial leaders welcoming the production. “Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich history and stunning landscapes make it the ideal canvas for a project of this magnitude,” said Premier Dr. Andrew Furey. “The province’s commitment to storytelling, talented crews, and unique beauty ensure that this series will capture the spirit of our province.”
Laura Churchill, CEO of Picture NL, echoed the sentiment: “Newfoundland and Labrador has long been home to incredible stories… We look forward to working with the team to showcase all that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer.”
No release date or other casting announcements have been shared as yet — but if the premise is anything to go by, viewers might want to start keeping an eye on the water.
