Sony has dropped the first trailer for upcoming Marvel adaptation Kraven the Hunter – and it’s a surprisingly bloody one!

Aaron Taylor-Johnson takes on the title role, aka Sergei Kravinoff, who originated on the comic book page as an adversary to the superhero Spider-Man. Seeing as it’s in the Sony wheel house, the studios confirms that the Spidey connection will be a part of the screen character, stating that this is “set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man.” The film tells of “how and why the iconic Marvel villain came to be” – but, you know, seeing as he’s the lead badass here, he’s clearly less of an all-out villain and more of an antihero.

The cast includes Christopher Abbott as the Foreigner, the film’s main villain; Ariana DeBose as Calypso, a voodoo priestess and Kraven’s love interest; Russell Crowe as Kraven’s father; Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Smerdyakov / Chameleon, Kraven’s half-brother who is a master of disguise; and Alessandro Nivola as Aleksei Sytsevich / Rhino, the latter of whom gets teased at the end of the trailer.

Kraven the Hunter will be high on carnage – as the trailer proudly makes clear; stabbings, a bear trap to the face, a noses gets bitten off. Tasty stuff.

The film is directed by J.C. Chandor, going a different direction here following titles such as Margin Call, A Most Violent Year, and Triple Frontier. The screenplay was written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (Iron Man, Uncharted) and Richard Wenk (The Equalizer, The Expendables 2).

Kraven the Hunter will be opening in Australian cinemas on October 5th and U.S. cinemas on October 6th.
