“It’s in the Air”: ‘Last of Us’ Season 2 Episode 5 Trailer Teases a Spore-Filled Descent Into Horror

HBO has unveiled the trailer for the next chapter in The Last of Us Season 2: Episode 5. Take a look above.

Following the emotional character dives in recent episodes, the fifth instalment looks to turn up the tension with the long-awaited introduction of a game-accurate element fans have been waiting for: spores. It’s a major step for the adaptation, which notably avoided their presence in Season 1, opting instead for tendril-based transmission. Now, it appears the world of The Last of Us is evolving, and that evolution might come with a monstrous price.

Set to release on May 11, the new episode finds Ellie (Bella Ramsey), Dina (Isabela Merced), and others venturing into more dangerous territory — with a chilling line referencing an empty hospital floor that’s already setting off alarm bells for those familiar with The Last of Us Part II. One chilling bit of foreshadowing? “The whole floor was empty. Not even rats.” For gamers, that’s enough to suggest something potentially horrific: the long-rumoured arrival of the Rat King — one of the most grotesque and terrifying infected the game sequel had to offer.

The preview also teases more of the warring Seraphites (colloquially called Scars) and the WLF, including what looks to be a brutal moment where the Scars string up a WLF soldier.

The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 5 premieres on HBO and Max on May 11 in the U.S. and May 12 in Australia (taking into account timezone differences).
