The Looney Tunes are gearing up for a big-screen return with Looney Tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up, an animated film set to land in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand in time for next year’s April school holidays.
Set to be distributed by Gold Coast-based Pinnacle Films, this marks the franchise’s first fully animated feature-length movie. The story centres on classic characters Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, voiced by Emmy-winning Eric Bauza, as they tackle an alien invasion triggered by a bubble-gum conspiracy. The adventure also brings in Petunia Pig.
The film had its premiere at the Annecy Animation Festival in France earlier this year, where it received positive responses from critics. Meanwhile, North American distributor Ketchup Entertainment is preparing for a campaign aimed at securing a Best Animated Feature nomination at the 2025 Academy Awards.
Andrew Devlin, Sales and Acquisitions Manager at Pinnacle Films, expressed excitement about the local release, saying: “We are thrilled to bring Looney Tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up to audiences across Australia and New Zealand. Both countries share a deep, long-standing affection for Looney Tunes, from the classic Merrie Melodies cartoons to the huge success of Space Jam and the iconic Warner Bros. Movie World theme park on the Gold Coast. This next chapter is sure to be a hit for fans of all ages, including a whole new generation discovering these characters for the first time.”
The film is directed by Pete Browngardt and developed by the team behind the acclaimed Looney Tunes Cartoons. The script was crafted by a team that includes Browngardt, Darrick Bachman, and Kevin Costello. Alex Kirwan served as supervising producer, with Nick Cross leading art direction.
Looney Tunes: The Day the Earth Blew Up is scheduled to open theatrically in both Australia and New Zealand on 27 March 2025. Pinnacle Films also revealed the below poster ahead of the movie’s anticipated arrival.
