A fun trailer has arrived for upcoming monster sequel Meg 2: The Trench, which again finds Jason Statham taking on colossal creatures from the deep.

The sequel to the 2018 sci-fi adventure brings back Statham as rescue diver-turned-giant-shark fighter Jonas Taylor, who finds himself on another high-stakes battle for survival after a malevolent mining operation threatens an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Pitted against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, our heroes must outrun, outsmart, and outswim their merciless predators in a pulse-pounding race against time.

It’s a wild trailer, showcasing what might be a thrill-ride of monster mayhem. The first film, in this writer’s opinion, didn’t quite nail the potential of its fun, B-grade concept, and the tame PG-13 approach didn’t help either. This one could be a popcorn-munching winner, at least if some of the proudly goofy snippets of action are anything to go by (shark eats T-Rex, Statham surfs giant wave on jetski, girl selfies herself being eaten).

A bit of a surprising choice of director here: Ben Wheatley, whose credits include dark psychological horror film Kill List and dystopian thriller High-Rise. The screenplay, based on the novel The Trench by Steve Alten, comes from Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber (The Meg, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and Dean Georgaris (The Meg, Lara Croft: Toom Raider – The Cradle of Life).

Meg 2: The Trench, also starring Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels and Cliff Curtis, will swim into Aussie cinemas on August 3rd and U.S. cinemas on August 4th.
