The trailer has arrived for Men, the latest unsettling work from Ex-Machina and Annihilation writer-director Alex Garland.
The film has Jessie Buckley (this year nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in Netflix release The Lost Daughter) playing Harper, a woman who has retreated alone to the English countryside in the aftermath of a personal tragedy. She begins to suspect that there is someone or something from the surrounding woods stalking her… it’s actually horror on a far different scale than she could have imagined. Her simmering dread soon becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears.
With Garland at the helm, it’s safe to assume that he’s going to be taking a left-of-field approach to the surface-level story of a woman stuck in a creepy place. Sure enough, this atmospheric and uncomfortable-looking picture is something of a nightmarish fever dream – a big part of which comes with Rory Kinnear playing all the men in the town, from the landlord, to a local priest, to the bartender at the local pub, to a young schoolboy! Garland could have one creepy study of grief, trauma and guilt here.
Men, edited by Oscar-nominated editor Jake Roberts (Hell or High Water) and reuniting Garland with Ex Machina and Annihilation cinematographer Rob Hardy, is scheduled for U.S. release on May 20th.
