Take a look at the official trailer that’s arrived for Next Goal Wins, a true-story sports comedy led by Michael Fassbender and directed by Oscar winner Taika Waititi.
Based on a 2014 documentary of the same name (we’ve included the trailer for the doco below!), Next Goal Wins tells the story of the American Samoa soccer team, who suffered the worst loss in World Cup history, losing to Australia 31-0 in 2001. With the 2014 World Cup approaching, the team recruits a down on his luck, maverick coach (Fassbender) to help turn their fate around.
The cast of this feel-good looking film includes Elisabeth Moss, Oscar Kightley, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Lehi Falepapalangi, Semu Filipo, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, Will Arnett, and Rhys Darby. And as the trailer shows, Waititi himself looks to have a role as a preacher (he also played a preacher in his 2016 film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople).
Next Goal Wins, which Waititi also wrote with Iain Morris (Flight of the Conchords, The Inbetweeners), will open in U.S. cinemas on November 17th and Australian cinemas on New Year’s Day, 2024.
