The official trailer has arrived for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the long-awaited follow-up to the 2011 Shrek spinoff.

We catch up with the Antonio Banderas-voiced feline hero, who finds out that he has only one of his nine lives left. He heads into the Black Forest on an epic journey to find the mythical Wishing Star, which will enable him to restore those lost lives. His quest finds him having to get the help of Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek, reprising the voice role), his former partner and nemesis, as well as a chatty and cheerful mutt, Perro (voiced by Harvey Guillén, What We Do in the Shadows).

Quite the voice cast here, including Florence Pugh as Goldilocks, John Mulaney as “Big” Jack Horner, Narcos‘ Wagner Moura as The Big Bad Wolf, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, Anthony Mendez, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

The film is directed by Joel Crawford, produced by Mark Swift, and written by Paul Fisher, all reuniting after delivering 2020’s The Croods: A New Age for DreamWorks Animation in the same capacity.

A new Puss in Boots movie has been in various stages of development going as far back as 2012; even Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse co-director Bob Persichetti was attached to direct in 2019. It’s surprising it has taken this long to get a Puss in Boots feature sequel off the ground, considering the first film drew over $US554 million at the worldwide box office. Combined with the four Shrek films, the overall franchise has earned over $US3.5 billion worldwide.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be in Australian cinemas on September 15th and U.S. cinemas on September 23rd.
