Filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Nest) is following up The Iron Claw with a romance starring Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler.
The project is titled Deep Cuts and is based on the debut novel of the same name by Holly Brickley, published just recently on February 25th.
Durkin is writing the adaptation of the book, which is set in the 2000s and follows two twentysomething music lovers as they navigate the complexities of ambition, belonging, and adulthood over the course of a transformative decade.

Here’s the book’s official synopsis, as per publisher Harper Collins:
The first time Joe plays Percy one of his songs in his college room in 2000, she instantly realises three things: One, she is watching a star in the making. Two, she can shape his music into something extraordinary. Three, she will always be on the sidelines. She swallows her jealousy and throws herself into collaboration, transforming Joe’s songs into indie hits with her blistering critiques. But there’s an undercurrent to the music they’re making – something undeniably electric, hurtling toward love. And then, almost inevitably, towards heartbreak. As Joe steps into the spotlight, can Percy bear to watch on in silence? And can he exist there without her? Deep Cuts is an irresistible novel about passion and obsession, love and longing and, above all, our need to be heard.
Durkin is again teaming up with A24 following the success of The Iron Claw, which became one of the company’s highest-grossing films of 2023. Along with starring, Ronan is also on board as a producer, joining a producing team that includes Josh Safdie, Central’s Ronald Bronstein, and Eli Bush.
Ronan’s recent projects include the Apple-released World War II drama Blitz and The Outrun, a memoir adaptation she also produced. Her next feature is Bad Apples, a comedic thriller also starring Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones, Interview with the Vampire). Butler had a packed 2024, starring in Apple’s World War II miniseries Masters of the Air and with roles in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders. His upcoming projects include Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing and Ari Aster’s Eddington.
There’s no word yet on when Deep Cuts will go into production, but with Durkin at the helm and two in-demand leads, this is one to watch.
