Netflix has released the teaser trailer for The Diplomat Season 3, offering a first look at the shifting political landscape and rising tensions set to play out in the show’s next chapter. And this time, there’s a new face in the middle of it all, as Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale, Get Out) officially joins the cast. Take a look above and read on below.
The trailer makes it clear that Whitford’s Todd Penn — husband to President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) — is going to be shaking things up in a big way. After a number of enticing snippets, the teaser finds him sharing a drink with Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), and the president herself. “How was everyone’s day at the office?” Todd asks casually.
Following the events of Season 2, Kate now finds herself in the centre of an even more volatile situation. With President Rayburn dead and Grace Penn now in office, Kate is pulled into the very role she previously resisted, as Hal continues his campaign to land her the vice presidency. Meanwhile, the complex relationships with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and Todd Penn only deepen the personal stakes.

“Season 3 flips the chessboard,” creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn told Netflix site Tudum. “In Season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”
Whitford, who reunites with his West Wing co-star Janney for the series, was equally enthusiastic about joining the cast. “I was thrilled when I heard that Debora was interested in me doing something,” Whitford said. “I had no idea what it was, but I love the show. I was jealous of the writing on this show. I love Keri. I love Rufus. And I hear Allison Janney is good at acting too. It’s an amazing cast.”
The returning cast includes Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, and Rory Kinnear. The Diplomat Season 3 arrives on Netflix in fall 2025 (that’s sometime in Spring for those in Australia).
