‘The Old Guard 2’ Trailer: Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman Duel in Netflix Sequel

Netflix has released the official trailer for The Old Guard 2, and it teases a brutal, globe-spanning clash between two screen icons: Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman. The sequel to the 2020 fantasy-action hit picks up with Theron’s Andy — now mortal — going up against a new enemy known as Discord, an ancient immortal played by Kill Bill star Thurman. Take a look above and learn more below.

This time, the stakes are even higher. Andy’s team is fractured: Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) remains in exile after betraying them, Quynh (Veronica Ngô) has emerged from her centuries-long underwater prison, and Nile (KiKi Layne) is no longer the rookie, having firmly claimed her place among the immortals.

“I believe audiences are excited to see Black Mamba and Atomic Blonde go toe to toe,” director Victoria Mahoney, who’s helmed episodes of series such as You, The Morning Show, and Power, told Netflix site Tudum. “In any fight scene, there has to be a worthy opponent… worthy opponents effortlessly elevate dramatic beats.”

“Being in that iron box was so terrifying and painful for Quynh,” Ngô said. “But then coming back to a totally strange world… This is 500 years, and everything has been changing.”

The new trailer also offers a first glimpse at Henry Golding’s character, Tuah — an enigmatic figure tied to the mysteries of immortal life. Golding told Tudum he even helped name the character: “I suggested his character be called Tuah, which in Malaysian means ‘luck.’”

Then there’s Thurman’s Discord, who brings more than just swordplay. According to Old Guard graphic novel co-creator Greg Rucka, “The first film is coming out of a place where Andy has found a purpose, so the second film has to challenge that. That challenge is embodied by Discord. Never mind that you have Charlize over here, and you have Uma over here, and you have melee weapons — anybody who doesn’t want to see the inevitable fight that will come from that has missed the last several years of cinema!”

Rucka returns on the screenplay, joined this time by Aussie writer Sarah L. Walker (The Last Anniversary, The Twelve). The cast also features the return of Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The Old Guard 2 will premiere on Netflix on July 2.
