‘Weapons’ Trailer: Josh Brolin, Julia Garner Face Vanishing Children in New Horror from ‘Barbarian’ Director

The trailer for Weapons has arrived – and if you thought Barbarian was unsettling, filmmaker Zach Cregger looks ready to dial the chaos up even further.

The upcoming horror film, directed and written by Cregger, teases a chilling descent into small-town terror. Set in a seemingly quiet community, the story follows the aftermath of a chilling event: one night at 2:17 a.m., every child from Mrs. Gandy’s class simply gets up, walks into the night… and disappears without a trace. As suspicion falls on Mrs. Gandy, played by Julia Garner, the town begins to unravel.

It’s a striking first trailer, packing in jarring, skin-crawling moments. A horde of children crash through windows like a waking nightmare. A woman drives a fork into her own face. There’s projectile vomiting. A child is hit by a speeding car. It’s clear that Weapons isn’t here to play it safe.

Josh Brolin plays a desperate father trying to find his missing child, while Alden Ehrenreich portrays a local officer caught in the growing hysteria. Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Amy Madigan, and June Diane Raphael round out the cast.

Cregger’s horror debut Barbarian was a hit in 2022, earning over $US45 million from a modest budget of $US4–4.5 million, and drawing praise for its sharp tension, bold structure, and left-field twists. With Weapons, Cregger looks to be levelling up — aiming for even greater ambition, scale, and a sharper, meaner edge. His spec script for Weapons caused a frenzy when it hit the market, triggering a bidding war between Netflix, New Line Cinema, TriStar Pictures, and Universal Pictures. New Line, eager to stay in the Cregger business, secured the rights within just 24 hours, reportedly offering $US38 million to cover all production costs — a major flex of confidence in what could be one of the year’s most ferocious genre releases.

Weapons opens in Australian cinemas on August 7 and U.S. cinemas on August 8.
