‘Wonka’ Trailer: Timothée Chalamet is Willy in Big Musical Prequel

The first trailer has been unveiled for Wonka, an upcoming musical starring Timothée Chalamet as iconic character Willy Wonka.

The film focuses on a younger, pre-factory version of the character at the center of Roald Dahl’s most iconic children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Wonka tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today.

The colourful, lively-looking picture is directed by Paul King, writer-director of both beloved Paddington films. King came up with the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby, the actor/writer who also co-wrote King’s Paddington 2.

A large supporting cast here, including Hugh Grant (as an Oompa Loompah, who gets a standout moment towards the end of the trailer), Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, and Olivia Colman, among others.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Chung-Hoon Chung (Oldboy, Last Night in Soho), production designer Nathan Crowley (Tenet, Dunkirk), editor Mark Everson (the Paddington films), costume designer Lindy Hemming (the Paddington films, Topsy-Turvy), and composer Joby Talbot (the Sing films). Neil Hannon of the band The Divine Comedy wrote the original songs for the film.

Warner Bros. Pictures. is releasing Wonka in Australian cinemas on December 14th and U.S. cinemas on December 15th.
