Our first look at Leslie Grace in character as Batgirl has arrived.

The In the Heights star took to social media to unveil a first look at her costume for Batgirl, the DC film set to be released in the U.S. on streaming service HBO Max sometime this year. Grace is playing Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon (J.K. Simmons, reprising the role he played in Justice League).

“‘I use their expectations against them. That will be their weakness,'” Grace captioned the image, a quote from Batgirl: Year One, the nine-part DC Comics mini-series published in 2003. “‘Not mine. Let them all underestimate me– And when their guard is down, and their pride is rising, let me kick their butts.'”

In Batgirl: Year One, Barbara intends to follow in her father’s footsteps and take on a career in law enforcement, but his over-protectiveness and society’s prejudices lead her to adopt the vigilante persona of Batgirl.

The film is directed by Bad Boys for Life helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, working from a screenplay by Birds of Prey and Bumblebee scribe Christina Hodson. Joss Whedon (Avengers, Justice League) had at one point been attached to both direct and write.

The cast also includes Brendan Fraser as the villain, a sociopathic pyromaniac known as Firefly, with Michael Keaton back as Bruce Wayne / Batman – a return we’ll also see in upcoming DC film The Flash.
