Bill Skarsgård (It, Nosferatu) and Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You, Red, White & Royal Blue) have signed up to star in Mosquito Bowl, a World War II drama set up at Netflix. This one’s coming from filmmaker Peter Berg (Lone Survivor, American Primeval), moving forward as part of his newly renewed creative partnership with the streaming giant.
The film is based on The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the non-fiction bestseller by Friday Night Lights author Buzz Bissinger. Set in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack, the plot follows four of America’s top college football players who enlist in the U.S. Marines. Before deploying to Okinawa — one of the bloodiest battles of the war — they take part in a legendary football game featuring some of the era’s most celebrated athletes. For many involved, it would be the last game they would ever play.
Details on the roles to be played by Skarsgård and Galitzine are being kept under wraps

Berg, who also penned the adaptation with Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, American Primeval), will direct the film. He’s producing through his Film 44 banner alongside Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment and Alex Gayner, with Ezra Emanuel serving as executive producer.
The project marks another football-focused collaboration between Berg and Grazer, who previously teamed for both the 2004 Friday Night Lights film and its acclaimed TV adaptation. A reboot of the Friday Night Lights franchise is reportedly also in the works.
Berg’s partnership with Netflix has been proving successful. His recent limited series American Primeval spent four weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 and, according to the streamer, pulled in over 35 million views. His 2023 series Painkiller also performed strongly, holding a Top 10 spot for five weeks with over 29 million views.
Mosquito Bowl does not yet have a release date. Stay tuned as further casting and production details come to light.
