Cameron Diaz is Open for ‘The Mask’ Sequel, But On One Condition

Cameron Diaz might just be ready to dust off her nightclub singer heels and step back into the zany world of The Mask.

While promoting her Netflix action-comedy Back in Action—her first film after a decade-long hiatus—the star revealed her willingness to reprise her role as Tina Carlyle. But she has one condition – one that we certainly agree with: Jim Carrey has to be on board.

“If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” Diaz said in an Access Hollywood interview, laughing as she referenced her breakout role alongside Carrey.

The 1994 film saw Carrey playing timid bank teller Stanley Ipkiss, who discovers a magical mask that unleashes a wacky trickster alter ego. Diaz was 21 when she auditioned and landed the role of jazz singer Tina Carlyle – thanks to a recommendation from a modelling agent. Diaz, who had no prior acting experience, began taking acting lessons after securing the part.

Carrey has also hinted at the possibility of revisiting the green-faced chaos. “Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess,” the actor said in a December 2024 interview with ComicBook.com. “It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money. […] You can’t be definite about these things. I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just – things tend to change.”

Diaz has also, kind of, floated the idea of getting the gang back together for another Charlie’s Angels movie. During the Access Hollywood interview, Diaz was asked about the possibility of another Charlie’s Angels movie that reunites her with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. “That would be amazing,” she said, and Jamie Foxx, her Back in Action co-star, chimed in with a pitch to include himself as key character. “That would be insane, I would be throwing my hat in the ring to be…” Diaz finished his thought: “I was gonna say, we need a Bosley. […] I’m gonna text [Lucy Liu] right now and pitch her Jamie as Bosley.”

In the world of sequels and reboots, never say never!
