Christopher Nolan’s Next Movie Set at Universal with Matt Damon in Talks to Star

After the massive success of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan is set to stay with Universal Pictures for his next feature, which reportedly has Matt Damon in talks to star.

As with most Nolan projects, details surrounding the plot remain tightly guarded. There’s also no title to go on. Deadline broke the news, reporting that the film is expected to begin production in early 2025.

Damon is reportedly in talks to star in the film, which may or may not feature a large ensemble. If confirmed, this will mark the third collaboration between Damon and Nolan, following their work together on Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023).

Nolan’s decision to stay with Universal seems a natural choice following the critical and commercial triumph of Oppenheimer, which grossed nearly $975 million worldwide and earned seven Academy Awards, including Nolan’s first Oscar win for Best Director. The partnership appears to be thriving, and, as reported by Variety, Universal is already planning a US IMAX release for this new project on 17 July 2026—a slot that mirrors the release dates of several of Nolan’s previous films.

Damon’s involvement would further strengthen Nolan’s reputation for reuniting with actors on multiple projects, placing him in the same league as Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy, both of whom have become Nolan regulars. With Damon potentially leading the cast, the project is likely to attract a range of high-profile talent for another ensemble production.

Nolan’s continued collaboration with Universal comes after his public split with Warner Bros. in 2020, following the studio’s controversial “Project Popcorn” initiative, which saw films debuting simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max. Nolan, who had worked with Warner Bros. for nearly two decades, voiced his displeasure on the studio’s handling of Tenet‘s release.

With production set to kick off next year, we’ll be eagerly awaiting further details on what promises to be another highly anticipated entry in Nolan’s filmography. Stay tuned!
