Take a look at the trailer that’s arrived for Civil War, the terrifyingly plausible new film from Alex Garland.

The Ex Machina and Annihilation writer-director depicts what it could be like if the United States descended in another Civil War. “All empires fall,” reads text in the official trailer for the film, which is set in the near future and envisions a complete breakdown into conflict as political, social, and racial divides reach boiling point.

“We’re American, okay?” Wagner Moura’s character nervously tells a soldier (or just a guy dressed in military gear) played by Jesse Plemons. “Okay,” Plemons responds, “What kind of American are you?”

Civil War, also starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman (playing the U.S. president), will be released by A24 in the U.S. on April 26th, 2024.
