The official trailer for Netflix’s upcoming animated series Devil May Cry has arrived, offering a look at what appears to be a high-octane adaptation of Capcom’s beloved video game franchise. Fans of demon hunters, motorcycle swords, twin brother rivalries, and, of course, the hit games, take note. Trailer above and info below.
Based on the franchise created by Hideki Kamiya, the plot follows Dante, a half-human, half-demon demon hunter for hire. He’s got a penchant for sharp wit, sharper weapons, and is largely unaware that the fate of both the human and demon realms rests on his shoulders. Yes, it’s personal: Dante’s mission is fuelled by vengeance for his mother’s death and a family legacy steeped in violence. Voicing Dante is Johnny Yong Bosch – an interesting choice, seeing as he voiced a different character, Nero (Dante’s nephew), in the game Devil May Cry 4.
The series is spearheaded by Adi Shankar, who wears several hats here as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Shankar, who’s also an executive producer on another hit Netflix animated game adaptation you may have heard of – Castlevania and its sequel Castlevania: Nocturne, has been working on this particular project for quite some time. “Rest assured, we are working very hard because we love the franchise and because we want to deliver something great,” Shankar told Netflix site Tudum.

It’s clear Shankar has big ambitions for this series. He and his development partner Alex Larsen have been in the trenches with this one since it was first announced back in 2018. “Our goal wasn’t just to pump out another animated show,” Shankar said. “My goal is to make one of the best shows on the Netflix platform — period.”
Bringing the Devil May Cry world to animated life is Studio Mir, who was behind Netflix projects The Legend of Korra and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. As far as Shankar is concerned, the South Korean animation studio’s track record “speaks for itself.”
This is the second animated series adaptation of the Capcom video game franchise. Japanese anime studio Madhouse delivered Devil May Cry: The Animated Series back in 2007. The 12-episode run was met with a mixed response. Screen Gems had the rights to make a live-action film version back in 2011, but nothing came from that.
Devil May Cry will premiere globally on Netflix on 3 April.
