The director has been chosen for Sony’s Bad Bunny-starring Marvel Comics movie, El Muerto.

As reported by The Wrap, set to direct El Muerto is Jonás Cuarón. Cuarón previously directed 2015 thriller Desierto and also co-wrote space survival film Gravity alongside his father, who you may know – Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón.

The screenplay is coming from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who’s also behind the script for upcoming DC Comics Latino hero film, Blue Beetle.

Rapper and singer Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, will have his first big lead role in the comic book movie, playing a Marvel antihero that’s in the Spider-Man universe. Also known as Juan Carlos Estrada Sánchez, the character is the son of a luchador and is in line to inherit the powers of El Muerto, a superhuman wrestler.

The character doesn’t really have a massive footprint in the comics. On the page, he attended a charity event organised by J. Jonah Jameson, who was hoping that El Muerto would defeat Spider-Man in the ring and unmask him.

Sony Pictures has lined up El Muerto for a U.S. theatrical release on January 12, 2024.
