New ‘Elio’ Trailer: Pixar’s Latest Sends a Young Hero on an Intergalactic Mission

Pixar has unveiled a brand new trailer for Elio, an upcoming animated sci-fi adventure about a kid who gets exactly what he wished for—and maybe a bit more. The film follows 11-year-old Elio, a self-described space fanatic who spends his days imagining life among the stars. His biggest dream? To be abducted by aliens. As luck would have it (or not), that dream comes true. Take a look above.

Voiced by Yonas Kibreab (Sweet Tooth), Elio is unexpectedly beamed up to the Communiverse, an intergalactic council where representatives from all corners of the cosmos gather. They think he’s the leader of Earth. Not bad for a kid who mostly stays indoors. From there, Elio embarks on a wild, galaxy-spanning misadventure—making strange new friends, dodging cosmic misunderstandings, and figuring out what it means to belong, all while trying to keep his cool as the fate of humanity (probably) hangs in the balance.

The trailer shows off a colourful, playful universe packed with oddball aliens, including Elio’s first extraterrestrial buddy, Glordon (voiced by Remy Edgerly), and an appearance from his fierce and caring mum, Olga, voiced by Oscar-winner Zoe Saldaña. The voice cast also features Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil, and Shirley Henderson.

Directed by Madeline Sharafian (Burrow), Domee Shi (Turning Red), and Adrian Molina (Coco), Elio looks like it could be another heartfelt and delightfully kooky entry in Pixar’s catalogue. The studio had a massive hit with Inside Out 2 last year, the sequel earning over $US1.7 billion worldwide and becoming its highest-grossing film to date.

Elio opens in Australian cinemas on June 19th and in U.S. cinemas on June 20th.
