Left to Right: ‘The Power of the Dog’, ‘Being the Ricardos’ and ‘Squid Game’

The 2022 Golden Globes have been, to say the least, quite the subdued affair.

Not televised, not live-streamed, and with nil hype, this year’s Golden Globe winners were announced via social media. This drastic change-up from the usual high-profile, star-studded Hollywood ceremony follows the pummeling that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organisation behind the Golden Globes) took in 2021. As reported by THR, “a series of Los Angeles Times pieces revealed that the collection of L.A.-based journalists for foreign outlets included zero Black members and had engaged in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices”. A number of company and celebrity boycotts followed.

And so, a much, much, much smaller Globes this year, but another year of Golden Globe winners across film and television nevertheless.

Netflix release The Power of the Dog won big on the Drama side, scoring Best Motion Picture, Best Director for New Zealand helmer Jane Campion, and Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee. Will Smith took home Best Actor – Drama for King Richard and Nicole Kidman earned her fifth Golden Globe, winning Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her performance as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. The film Comedy/Musical side of things saw Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story win Best Motion Picture, West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler win Best Actress, and Andrew Garfield take home Best Actor for Netflix musical Tick, Tick… Boom!

HBO’s Succession won Best Television Series – Drama for the second time (previously in 2020), with stars Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook winning Best Actor and Best Actress in a Supporting Role, respectively, in the TV drama department. TV Drama also saw Pose‘s Michaela Jaé Rodrigue win Best Actress – the first time a trans woman has won the award. On the musical/comedy end, Hacks and its star Jean Smart were awarded Best Television Series and Best Actress, while Jason Sudeikis earned a Best Actor win for Ted Lasso. Fans of Netflix hit Squid Game will be happy to know that the popular series didn’t leave empty-handed; Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role on Television went to O Yeong-su for his performance as elderly player Oh Il-nam.
