The life of Whitney Houston is taken to the screen in the biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody, which has its trailer for you to watch below.

Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The End of the F***ing World) takes on the role of the hugely influential, incredibly successful singer and actress in a film described as…

“a no-holds-barred portrait of the complex and multifaceted woman behind The Voice. From New Jersey choir girl to one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time, audiences are taken on an inspirational, poignant—and so emotional—journey through Houston’s trailblazing life and career, with show-stopping performances and a soundtrack of the icon’s most beloved hits as you’ve never heard them before. Don’t you wanna dance?”

The cast includes Stanley Tucci as hit record producer and record executive Clive Davis; Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown, who was with Whitney in a tumultuous 14-year-marriage; Tamara Tunie as Cissy Houston, Whitney’s mother; and Nafessa Williams as Robyn Crawford, Whitney’s former assistant and creative director.

The film is directed by Kasi Lemmon, making her third biopic following 2007’s Talk to Me (about Washington D.C. radio personality Ralph “Petey” Greene) and 2019’s Harriet (about American abolitionist and social activist Harriet Tubman). The screenplay was written by four-time Oscar-nominated scribe Anthony McCarten, whose credits include Bohemian Rhapsody, The Theory of Everything, The Two Popes, and Darkest Hour.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody will be opening in U.S. cinemas on December 21st and Australian cinemas on Boxing Day.
